Sacred Heart School held a fantastic Science Day with the exciting theme of Flight. Throughout the day, children took part in different investigations and challenges to explore how things fly and move through the air. Some classes focused on parachutes, experimenting with different materials to see which would slow a fall the most effectively. They tested their designs carefully and discussed why some materials worked better than others.
Two classes explored aeroplane design by creating and testing paper aeroplanes. They experimented with different folds and shapes, investigating which designs flew the furthest or stayed in the air the longest.
Another class took on the tricky egg drop challenge. Their task was to design a way to protect an egg so that it could be thrown from a height and land safely without cracking. The pupils worked creatively, thinking about cushioning and air resistance.
In Reception, the children designed and made their own gliders, testing them to see how well they could travel through the air. One class had a particularly unusual mission: to transport a rabbit safely using balloons! Pupils had to think carefully about balance, lift and stability as they planned how to move their precious passenger.
Our Nursery children enjoyed the story “Up, Up, Up”, which is all about kites and balloons. Inspired by the book, they created their own colourful kites and had great fun playing parachute games together. Another class looked to nature for inspiration by creating whirligigs based on sycamore seeds. They explored how the spinning motion helps the seeds travel through the air. It was a wonderful day full of curiosity, creativity and teamwork. The children had a brilliant time exploring the science behind flight and discovering how different forces help things move through the air.
